Formal Flow

A simple and formal design completes this contemporary residence.

The original outdoor space on this property was at the front of the home, had no privacy from the surrounding street frontages and was very sloped with little unusable terraces. A considered design resolution was required to integrate the gardens, swimming pool and outdoor entertaining areas with the main pedestrian entry and lawn area to create usable private platforms.

The team from A Total Concept decided to install a privacy garden then the main entry path to one side of the property to maximise the space available for the pool and lawn area. 

The swimming pool located adjacent to the entry path has a simplistic shape with a deep middle and shallow at the ends with broad entry steps that allow the entire pool to be safely used by the family’s young children. Children can stand at either end of the pool for games and volleyball. Diving towards a deep point from all around creates a very safe pool.

The swimming pool has a light blue rendered interior that cause the water to shimmer and sparkle during the day while interest continues into the night with numerous pool and garden lights to add life and cast shadows. Limestone waterline tiles plus the limestone paving around visually replicate steps to the rear of the pool leading to the elevated poolside entertaining terrace.

The elevated poolside entertaining terrace provides views over the swimming pool toward the home and beyond to Balmoral Beach. It incorporates stunning timber daybeds for lounging and socialising while supervising children both in the swimming pool and playing on the limestone steps leading from pool to entertaining area.

A large level lawn is created between pool and the home for energetic use by the children and their friends. Immediately adjacent to the residence is a wide formal entertaining area with several broad steps leading upward to the lawn area. A focal point is created towards the pool and elevated entertaining area from the home.

All the different spaces are linked together with the consistent use of a blond limestone paving, painted rendered surfaces, traditional sandstone walls (using sandstone reclaimed from the old gardens) and a consistent planting style.

Privacy has been created around the swimming pool and lawn areas through the use of tall hedges and supplemented with an intentionally simple palette of glossy foliated plants. 

The plant species used include formal hedges of Leightons Green Pine and Glossy Tinus; specimen plantings of stunning Blue Magnolia; and white coloured borders of Agapanthus ‘Blue Peter’, Japanese Box, White Peace Lily and White Florists Gardenia. Canary island Ivy covers the ground while the heavenly scented White Star Jasmine spreads its aroma around the pool.

The flowing simplicity of the design visually unifies the overall project and adds immeasurable value to the property, to literally create ‘a total concept’ and showcase the company’s reputable design skills.
