Pool Cabana and Pool

We were commissioned to design the extensive external areas of this stunning Coogee property incorporating a poolside cabana and swimming pool for relaxing and socialising for the owners and a general upgrade to all gardens. 

The existing garage located at the rear of the property was too hard to access for parking purposes and was located hard on the side boundary, so it was decided to use the overall structure and footprint to develop a poolside cabana. It was advantageous to use the footprint of the existing garage because current planning regulations would have required a new structure be positioned 900mm away from the boundary, thus reducing the space able to be developed.

Being wider than a standard garage, the existing structure was proportionally big enough to be utilised as a cabana and the required building works including filling in the existing garage door, lining the inside and cutting in large concertinaed doors to the side facing the future pool made economic sense to use the existing structure. 

A bathroom with shower, WC and basin was also incorporated so that young feet didn’t need to track water through the home and can double as a guest room whilst the traditional style of the poolside cabana ensures that the overall project is in keeping with the home. 

The cabana incorporates a large paved entertaining area and is set within garden areas to all perimeters.

The pool itself was designed in a geometric shape with an elevated lounge area to the rear of the pool to add interest and functionality, allowing children a platform to dive from. A simple grey border tile and a white interior was used to soften its overall appearance rather than use a strong colour that would make the pool a bold statement.

The paving is a silver travertine and the elevated planter walls painted to match the residence.

Planting has been kept simplistic to screen a three storey block of units behind using Bambusa textilis gracilis (Slender Weavers Bamboo).

A colourful Gaugaun print has been used within the cabana to add a subtle yet strong focal point.

At nighttime the poolside cabana is well lit with down lighting in the ceiling which, together with lights in the swimming pool, creates mood effects with washes of light and dancing shadows when viewed from the home and functional lighting within the spaces.

A quality sound system together with all electrical components such as lights, irrigation plus swimming pool heater, lights and spa jets are all linked to the cabana’s and residence’s smart home system.
